Queensland Facility for Advanced Bioinformatics (QFAB)

QFAB provides bioinformatics and biostatistics services for the analysis and management of ‘omics and clinical datasets.

We work nationally, with industry, clinicians, and applied and academic life science researchers, predominantly in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical fields. This diversity builds our capacity to apply new skills and approaches to a project, to implement the most effective solutions and unlock the full value of data.

Our services range from contract research, experimental design and analysis, data capture and mining, through to genomics, proteomics and metabolomics analyses, and data visualisation. We are experts in cross-domain integration of multiple data types, including linkage to clinical data.

We also develop scientific software and we can design, deploy and refine the high performance IT infrastructure that is required to support life science informatics.

To empower researchers in mastering their data generation and analysis, we offer a wide range of courses and workshops, covering statistics, data processing and bioinformatics. Free consultations are available to our member universities to assist life sciences students and ECRs to get started with bioinformatics techniques and to provide advice.

QFAB provides bioinformatics, biostatistics and biodata services to life sciences and health researchers.

Established in 2007 to act as a shared core facility for its members, QFAB is now part of QCIF, a not-for-profit public company whose members are:

  • Central Queensland University
  • Griffith University
  • James Cook University
  • Queensland University of Technology
  • The University of Queensland
  • The University of the Sunshine Coast (associate member)

Services

Consulting – Data science skills

Working closely with researchers, the QFAB team applies data management, integration, analysis and visualisation techniques to unlock the full value of large-scale biological and clinical datasets.

Skills development and advice

To empower researchers in mastering their data generation and analysis, we offer a wide range of courses and workshops, covering statistics, data processing and bioinformatics.

  • Training workshops: Use of the Genomics Virtual Lab (GVL) for bioinformatics courses and R Server for biostatistics
  • Analysis Hotel: Hosts researchers to perform their analysis embedded within QFAB; facilitated access to QFAB-hosted tools, applications, data and resources
  • Software and data carpentry: Volunteer-based hands-on training on basic programming and scripting skills
  • Clinics: Free service delivered at QFAB member universities to assist life sciences students and ECRs to get started with bioinformatics techniques and to provide advice

Data

Customised solutions and support to collect, manage, analyse, share, publish, find and access data.

  • Data chaperoning: Free service provided by EMBL-Australian Bioinformatics Resource to support researchers with their submissions to international repositories.

Tools
