Mobile phone diagnostic tool to help detect disease

IMB researcher Professor Kirill Alexandrov has received funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to develop a cheap, portable biosensor to detect a range of infectious diseases, including Dengue fever and Zika virus.

IMB staff have been recognised for their outstanding contributions to the UQ community at the 2016 UQ Awards for Excellence ceremony, held on 9 June.

IMB Research Grants Manager Michelle Foley received a UQ Award for Excellence in Service, and IMB’s Community for Antimicrobial Drug Discovery (CO-ADD) team received a UQ Award for Excellence in Innovation.

ARC invests $7M in IMB research

Researchers at UQ’s Institute for Molecular Bioscience have received $7 million from the Australian Research Council (ARC) to pursue discoveries in a range of health and agriculture areas. The grants will fund projects to develop biosensors that can talk to smartphones, more efficient algal biofactories, and pain treatments from venom.

University of Queensland researchers have launched a global search to discover antibiotics capable of combating superbug bacteria that are resistant to current antibiotics. The Community for Open Antimicrobial Drug Discovery (CO-ADD) is a not-for-profit initiative funded by $3.1 million from the Wellcome Trust, and led by researchers at IMB.

Funds to help UQ get to the heart of cardiovascular disease
