Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Hons)

Why did you choose IMB to undertake your research?

I was an arachnophobic that decided to challenge my fear to work with spiders! I wanted to use the amazing molecules in venoms to make new medicines and biotechnologies, and the IMB is a world-leading research facility in this space.

Do you have any tips for future students interested in life sciences research?

Find something that really grabs your curiosity. Research takes resilience and persistence, but if you really care about what you are doing you'll have the drive to succeed. Importantly, you need to seek out good mentors who will support and challenge you on your journey so that you grow as a scientist.

Can you please share a quick description of the research you are currently conducting?

I use the natural products in spider venoms to make new medicines against parasites of humans and animals.

What interested you in joining the IMB Science Ambassador Program?

I love science communication and education. Nothing makes me happier than seeing a kid's face light up as I show them a tarantula for the first time and get to answer all of their curious questions!

What do you enjoy doing out of free time?

I love reading, drawing, being out in nature and curling up with my dog Pippin on the couch for a good Netflix binge!
