Congratulations to IMB’s Dr Markus Muttenthaler who received the Miklós Bodanszky Award for his outstanding contributions to peptide science.
The award is given to early career researchers who have made significant contributions to peptide-based drug research.
Markus is a biological and medicinal chemist with a strong passion for translational research.
His interests lie in the exploration of nature’s diversity to develop molecular tools, diagnostics and therapeutics with applications in neuropathic pain, autism, cancer and neurodegenerative diseases.
Markus is internationally recognised for discovering potentially therapeutic peptides in venoms.
His work focuses on developing tools that facilitate basic fundamental research and the drug discovery process.
“We are focused on potent and selective venom peptides, that make great molecular probes and promising drug leads to study and treat human disease,” Markus said.
“We are still only scratching the surface of what nature has to offer in terms of chemical diversity. Bridging the gap from venomous animals to life-saving therapeutics is a thrilling and very rewarding field to work in.”

Markus received his award this month at the 34th European Peptide Symposium in Germany.
