'Plants – and the future of global food security'

Prof. Julian Cribb

Feeding 10 billion people sustainably in the mid-late 21st century is the greatest challenge humanity has ever faced. While food demand will double by 2060, scarcities are emerging of almost all resources required to satisfy it. This challenges us to rethink food itself and how we produce it, and to create diets and foods for the future that are safe, healthy, nutritious and tread less heavily on the planet. The role of plants in this will be absolutely critical and the opportunities enormous.
Julian Cribb

Author, journalist, editor and science communicator Julian Cribb is principal of Julian Cribb & Associates, which provides specialist consultancy in the communication of science, agriculture, food, mining, energy and the environment.
Julian’s career includes appointments as newspaper editor, scientific editor for The Australian newspaper, director of national awareness for CSIRO, member of numerous scientific boards and advisory panels, and president of national professional bodies for agricultural journalism and science communication.

This initiative has been coordinated by the Queensland Alliance for Agriculture & Food Innovation, the Global Change Institute and UQ Science as part of the global Fascination of Plants Day on 18 May 2012.
