Medical researchers, patients and members of the public will be rallying against significant cuts to medical research funding proposed for the upcoming Federal budget. The rally will be held Tuesday 19 April at 12pm in King George Square, Brisbane City. This rally follows similar rallies in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Canberra, Darwin and Adelaide that attracted over 9000 people. Brisbane’s rally will include the following speakers:
The Hon. Peter Dutton MP – Shadow Minister for Health and Ageing, Federal Parliament of Australia (LNP)
Larissa Waters – Senator-Elect for Queensland, Federal Parliament of Australia (Greens)
Wally Lewis – Journalist, former NRL player
Danielle Tindle – Hodgkin’s Lymphoma survivor & Senior Project Officer for Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Services, Royal Children’s Hospital, Brisbane
Darren Lee – Melanoma patient and Researcher, UQ School of Business Economics
Brendan Parkes – Leukaemia and viral infection patient who received a research-based treatment developed at QIMR and Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital
Professor Brandon Wainwright – Director, Institute for Molecular Bioscience, University of Queensland.
Professor Geoff Hill – Former Queenslander of the Year, Queensland Institute for Medical Research and Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital
Professor Julie Campbell – Director, Wesley Research Institute, and President, Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes.
