IMB welcomes federal budget funding announcement

11 May 2011

IMB's Director, Professor Brandon Wainwright, has applauded the Federal Government's decision to increase funding for medical research in last night's budget.

"I welcome the news that the Federal Government has preserved funding for the National Health and Medical Research Council, and in fact has increased it by a small percentage," Professor Wainwright said. "It is an encouraging sign that the government recognises the importance of this research, which is seeking to improve the health and lives of each and every Australian."

After credible sources reported that the budget of the National Health and Medical Research Council was under threat of significant cuts, medical researchers all over the nation took to the streets and protested.

Over 10,000 people rallied in Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Perth, Darwin and Hobart, and others voiced their objection on social media sites and through petitions and letters to politicians.

The campaigning appeared to have paid off, with the NHMRC's Medical Research Endowment Account receiving a 4.3 percent increase to $746.1 million. The Minister for Mental Health and Ageing, The Honourable Mark Butler MP, has also announced a strategic review into medical research funding in a bid to improve the system. Mr Butler also praised the medical research community for their passion and commitment.
