The University of Queensland, IMB and external organisations offer a huge variety of scholarships to assist you with your research training.

IMB Travel Award

You can apply for travel funding of up to $2000 during your studies.

Selected IMB postgraduate students will receive grants to assist with travel expenses to attend and present at domestic or international conferences.

Eligibility requirements:

  • you must have attained Milestone 1
  • you must be endorsed by their Principal Advisor. 

IMB Writing Up Award

You can apply for funding to cover living expenses while you write and submit your PhD thesis.

IMB will provide a modest income to selected postgraduate candidates to support them for up to 3 months.

Eligibility requirements:

  • you must have attained Milestone 3
  • you must be between 42-48 months of candidature
  • you must not be currently receiving a scholarship
  • you must provide clearly documented evidence of significant progress towards submission of a thesis (i.e. accepted or submitted manuscripts, advanced drafts of thesis chapters)
  • your Principal Advisor must endorse your application and commit to covering 50% of the cost of the award from their research budget.

Successful applicants are expected to submit a thesis within the duration of the IMB Writing Up Award. 

IMB Winter School Award

Need to brush up on your mathematical, statistical and computational techniques?

IMB will cover registration costs to attend the UQ Winter School in Mathematical and Computational Biology for selected IMB postgraduate candidates.

The UQ Winter School in Mathematical and Computational Biology is designed to introduce bioinformatics, mathematical and computational biology to students and researchers working in the fields of biology, mathematics, statistics, computer science, information technology, complex systems analysis, and chemical and medical sciences and engineering.

Wainwright Diversity and Inclusion Scholarship

Are you a female researcher passionate about a career within Molecular Bioscience?

Named after the Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB)’s former Director, Prof Brandon Wainwright, the award not only provides a generous stipend and additional support funds to facilitate career initiatives, it also comes with mentorship and guidance to assist the successful applicant to reach their full potential in terms of pursuing a longstanding career in research.

The scholarship is open to all domestic female PhD applicants, who have a nominated Principal Advisor (PA) and project, which is based at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB).

  • Applicants must meet the entry requirements for a higher degree by research.
  • Applicants must be Australian and NZ citizens, Australian permanent residents
  • Applicants must be female
  • Applicants must be enrolled in the PhD program through IMB for the duration of the scholarship.

IMB Postgraduate Award

You can apply for funding to help with your cost of living

Selected IMB postgraduate candidates can be considered for a living stipend, which is equivalent in value to the Research Training Program.

Eligibility requirements:

  • you must meet UQ requirements for entry into the PhD program
  • you must be nominated by an IMB Group Leader (prospective Principal Advisor), who will need to agree to cover 50% of the stipend cost from their research budget.

How to apply

Nominations must be submitted by the student’s intended Principal Advisor online (via Pebbles Senior).

All applications are reviewed and awarded by the IMB Higher Degree by Research (HDR) Committee. 

Recipients of IMB Postgraduate Awards are encouraged to apply for alternate scholarships of equal or greater value (e.g. RTP, UQI). If successful, the recipient must relinquish the IMB Postgraduate Award. Only IMB postgraduate candidates are eligible to hold this award. 

IMB Research Advancement Award

Would $30 000 give your research career a boost?

Selected PhD students who are commencing their studies at IMB will receive an additional $30 000 career enrichment award on top of their RTP (or equivalent) scholarship.

Eligibility requirements:

  • applicants must be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or New Zealand citizen
  • applicants must not currently be enrolled in a PhD
  • prior to taking up the award, successful applicants must secure a UQ Graduate School Scholarship (or equivalent) and must commence their PhD studies at IMB
  • receipt of the award is subject to maintaining eligibility, and continued high levels of performance. 

Applications are sought from talented domestic students who demonstrate:

  • excellence in academic achievement
  • a passion for scientific research
  • independence and leadership potential
  • an ability to communicate a love of science.

Honours students, graduates, or equivalent are encouraged to apply. 

How to apply

The IMB Research Advancement Award is advertised and granted annually.

Shortlisted applicants will have an opportunity to tour the facilities at IMB and meet with IMB Group Leaders of their choice to discuss available PhD research projects.

During the visit, shortlisted applicants will be interviewed by the selection panel. 

IMB CSC Postgraduate Award

Do you plan on applying for a CSC-UQ scholarship?

If so, you may be eligible to receive an IMB CSC Postgraduate Award, which provides an additional $6000 per annum to boost your living allowance.
