Algae based solar factories are being designed for large-scale high value recombinant protein production. The optimisation of solar factory design for recombinant protein production requires coordinated biological research, bioprocess engineering and pilot scale trials.

Objective/mission (The vision): To conduct pilot scale trials to optimise commercial scale processes for the production of algae based recombinant proteins.

Research approach (The initiative): Model guided design will be used to identify bioprocess bottlenecks for specific protein targets. Experimental data from pilot scale algae cultivation will then feed back into the techno-economic and life cycle analysis to deliver efficiency improvements that then guide further and precise process optimisation.

Impacts and applications: Optimising recombinant protein production processes support triple bottom line systems optimization to deliver economic, social and environmental benefits.
