Brisbane peptide research will be promoted internationally thanks to UQ researchers receiving an inaugural grant from the Lord Mayor.
Dr Christina Schroder from UQ's Institute for Molecular Bioscience received a joint Lord Mayor's Convention Trailblazer Grant with Dr Johan Rosengren from UQ's Faculty of Medicine to attend a leading international conference.
Dr Schroder, who works alongside Dr Rosengren at The Australian Peptide Association, is particularly excited about the grant’s potential to promote research in their field in Brisbane.
“Brisbane is a vibrant hub for peptide research, so I am excited to be able to showcase our research on the world stage,” Dr Schroder said.
“Bringing an international conference here will give local scientist a chance to interact with high profile scientists and the pharmaceutical industry, something which we are lacking in Brisbane.”
Associate Professor Michael Piper from UQ's Faculty of Medicine also received a grant.
“I was very honoured to be awarded one of these grants,” Professor Piper said.
“The grant will help me to attend the premier conference on my field of expertise, fetal brain development, and the opportunity to bid to bring the conference to Brisbane in coming years.”
Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk hopes the grants will highlight Brisbane’s expertise at these conferences and help secure future events for Brisbane.
In 2016 and 2017, conferences and business events generated $257 million dollars for the Brisbane economy.
All three researchers will attend conferences in Japan.
