Last chance to apply for IMB Research Advancement Awards

12 Sep 2014

The University of Queensland’s Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB) is calling on the nation’s most promising young scientists to apply for a $30,000 top-up scholarship to help them kick-start their research careers.

The inaugural IMB Research Advancement Awards provide talented Australian and New Zealand scientists with a $30,000 top-up scholarship over three years to support their PhD studies and research training at IMB.

Interested students must submit their Expression of Interest (EOI) form before 5pm this Monday 15 September 2014.

IMB Deputy Director (Research) Professor Jenny Stow hopes this award will encourage the best and brightest students to begin their research careers at one of Australia’s leading life sciences institutes.

“Postgraduate students play a vital role in our laboratory teams, bringing new ideas and energy to the labs every day,” Professor Stow said.

“We’re fortunate that many of our students relocate from overseas to train with us here in Brisbane because of our global reputation for research excellence.

“We have established this award to remind our domestic students of the world-class research that’s happening right here in their own backyards, and to support them to be a part of this research that contributes so much to our community,” she said.

IMB students can undertake research across many disciplines, including our research priority areas of medical genomics, drug discovery and biotechnology, and our health impact areas of pain, superbugs, inflammation and rare diseases.

IMB PhD graduate, Dr Melanie Shakespear, said the facilities and diversity of research offered by IMB creates an exciting atmosphere for students.

“The great thing about being part of a multidisciplinary institute is that if the expertise you need for your project isn’t available in your lab, you can just send an email to another lab in the building and ask for the experience or a reagent or a machine, and it is always there,” she said.

Domestic students (Australian permanent residents or citizens, and New Zealand citizens) who are currently studying or have recently completed an honours degree, or equivalent, have a passion for research, and are keen to pursue a PhD at IMB in 2015 are encouraged to apply.

EOIs close 5pm this Monday 15 September 2014.
