Supporting life-saving research at CCRG

27 June 2025

Since joining IMB, CCRG researchers continue their efforts to improve survival rates and quality of life for patients with life-threatening conditions including heart disease, lung disease and sepsis.

CCRG’s Scientific and Translational Research Laboratory (STARLab), lead by IMB’s Dr Jacky Suen, has furthered their research into hypothermic oxygenated perfusion (HOPE) for donor hearts. This game-changing research represents the first major innovation in the field of heart transplantation in over 50 years. Thanks to CCRG’s research leadership and the swift clinical uptake of the new technology, every donor heart in Australia and New Zealand now has the chance to be transported to a transplant centre, increasing heart transplants by approimately 25% per year.

CCRG also recently received funding to support the purchase of new equipment through the Sheila & Bernard Joel Life Saving Medical Equipment Foundation and The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation. One of the new pieces of equipment is a mechanical CPR device, a game-changer for our cardiac arrest research. It improves the quality and reproducibility of resuscitation, ultimately helping researchers develop interventions that could save more lives. Having access to this and other technology accelerates research outcomes and helps to drive transformative research focused on improving survival rates and quality of life amongst critical care patients.
