UQ Project Three Billion

The human genome contains 3 billion DNA base pairs that provide the blueprint of life. They encode the proteins that perform vital cellular functions, and control the complex regulatory machinery that ensures the right parts of the genetic code are turned on in the correct cells, at the appropriate time, and in the right amount. Variation in DNA determines phenotypic differences between individuals and influences disease status.

The goal of UQ3B is to decode the critical base changes that influence disease processes and explain variation between individuals. We do this by applying advanced techniques in DNA and RNA sequencing, statistical genomics, epigenetics and functional biology.

The ultimate aim of UQ3B is to make significant advances in understanding the genetics of disease and use functional studies to develop new diagnostic methods and treatment targets across a range of diseases.
