IMB Summer/Winter Traineeship Award

This award provides support for undergraduate or postgraduate coursework students who are currently enrolled in an Australian or international university to undertake a research project in an IMB laboratory during the southern hemisphere semester break.

Value and duration

Summer trainees will receive A$300 per week for 6-10 weeks between mid-November to mid-February.

Winter trainees will receive A$1000 for the 4-6 weeks between mid-June to mid-July.

Students who aren’t enrolled at UQ and are not based in Brisbane who are required to relocate will be automatically considered for a one-off payment of up to A$1000 to subsidise travel and accommodation expenses.


Students who are eligible for the program will:

  • be currently enrolled at university, whether it be UQ, elsewhere in Australia or overseas
  • have completed at least one year of study
  • be studying for a degree relevant to the research discipline to which you have applied at IMB
  • have a high level of academic achievement
  • have the potential to and interest in undertaking postgraduate study
  • be able to demonstrate a high level of English-language proficiency
  • be eligible for a visa to visit Australia if from an international university.
