Born in Russia, Kirill Alexandrov completed his undergraduate degree at Leningrad State University (now St Petersburg University). He wrapped up his Masters degree in invertebrate zoology in 1989 – the year the Berlin Wall came down – and moved to the USA, where he worked at Harvard Medical School. In 1991 he joined a PhD program at EMBL Heidelberg in Germany, focusing on cell biology.

He went on to postgraduate work at the Department of Physical Biochemistry at the Max Planck Institute in Dortmund, and remained there for 13 years, becoming a group leader in 1999 and establishing the Dortmund Protein Production Facility in 2007.
